"Meet Alexa, Your Smartest New Friend"
Watch out, Siri – Alexa could be giving you a run for your money.
Amazon’s talking cylinder, which responds to the name ‘Alexa’, may be the closest thing to Star Trek’s omnipresent computer that we know of. She can sync up to your phone and play music, serve as an alarm clock, dish out the latest news and weather, compile and keep track of to-do or shopping lists and answer a wide array of questions you may have…much like a Pringles can-sized virtual assistant.
She can even tell a joke or two (Although her sense of humour could use a bit of a tune-up).
Alexa relies on ‘far field technology’, a state-of-the-art 360-degree omnidirectional speaker system that hears you clearly from anywhere in the room. She’s provides hands-free voice control, mining data from a cloud for Amazon music, Prime music, iheartaudio and TuneIn. It’s also Bluetooth-enabled, so you can stream other popular services, such as Spotify, iTunes, GooglePlay and Pandora, from your phone or tablet device. This makes it the perfect road-trip companion (if you can tap into a personal hotspot).
At GreenOwl, we often think how amazing it would be to have a virtual personal assistant designed for everyday drivers. These days, bylaws ban motorists from using their phones while on the road - or suffer the consequences with hefty fines. How convenient would it be if drivers could access that same information without taking their eyes off the road? If they could simply ask for information verbally - much like Alexa - as if there was another passenger in the car with them, possessing infinite knowledge. A passenger who has a deep understanding of the driver’s habits and can offer helpful tips by predicting their trajectory.
It’d definitely be a more efficient way, rather than pulling the car over to safety and then looking for it yourself. GreenOwl’s vision is to design a car-friendly virtual personal assistant. One who can do all of that and much more. Stay tuned for more updates on what that could potentially look like in the near future.
The Amazon Alexa retails for approximately $180. Find out more here: http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-SK705DI-Echo/dp/B00X4WHP5E
