Project MAREA

Microsoft has been expanding its cloud services infrastructure as of late, for example last year, the company announced investment deals with Hibernia and Aqua Comms for a subsea cable connection between North America and Ireland. They are also partnering with Materialise to begin offering their cloud-based 3D printing services in Microsoft products. The latest news has put them in the headlines, the trans-Atlantic cable known as project MAREA.

Tech giants Microsoft and Facebook have announced plans to build MAREA, the highest capacity data link between the United States and Europe. The subsea cable will run between Virginia, USA and Bilbao, Spain. The companies will begin work on the cable in August, and it should be done by October 2017. Running 6,600km (4100miles) across the Atlantic Ocean, this will be just one of numerous other undersea cable projects owned or funded by large tech companies.

The new MAREA cable will have greater capacity than any other undersea cables spanning the Atlantic, estimated at 160 Tbps, as noted in a blog post by Frank Rey, director of global network acquisition for Microsoft's cloud infrastructure and operations. The cable will run 6,600km long, featuring an "open design" to establish fiber-optic connections.

“Being physically separate from these other cables helps ensure more resilient and reliable connections for our customers in the United States, Europe, and beyond,” Rey wrote. Microsoft said MAREA will help boost the speed and reliability of its cloud services.

Running over 4000miles across the Atlantic Ocean, this will be just one of numerous other undersea cable projects owned or funded by large tech companies. Google began the trend in 2010 when it invested in a cable across the Pacific between the United States and Japan called Unity.
